The 32oz, organic cotton ColdBrew filter is the perfect alternative to disposable coffee filters. Easy to use, and all you need to do to clean them is compost the grounds, rinse, and hang to dry. Plus, even compostable filters take a lot of water to produce and carbon to transport, so reusable filters dramatically reduce the footprint of your ColdBrew.

Use and care

Initially, boil your filters in fresh water to clean and shrink for about 10 minutes.  For a hot brew, brew as is customary with your favorite method, compost the grounds, and thoroughly rinse filter.  Hang to dry.  Periodically, once every 4-6 weeks, boil the filters in fresh water to remove any accumulated coffee oils.  If you'd like, you can add a scoop of baking soda to the regular cleaning process to enhance your filter.

DIY ColdBrew instructions from the vendor:

Initially, boil new filters in fresh water to clean and shrink for 10 minutes. 

Fit ColdBrew filter over lip of wide mouthed canning jar.

Add desired amount of coarsely ground coffee.                   

We recommend 3 ounces by weight (1 cup dry) per 32 ounce serving.   

Wet (bloom) the dry coffee and let set for 30 seconds, allowing the water to fully penetrate the coffee grounds from the center.  This is necessary to maximize flow and to avoid dry pockets, and weak brew.

Add filtered water in batches or very slowly, to fill.

Close filter by gathering the top of fabric together, wrapping the strap around the gathered neck of the filter, and pass through the attached ring (see video). 

Times vary with volume of brew and ambient temperature. Warmer temperatures and shorter brew times yield a brighter and less extracted brew. Long cold soaks produce rich and smooth brews.

The filters are made in Austin, TX by CoffeeSock. All filters are sewn and packaged by happy human beings making a fair and living wage. Their cotton is all GOTS certified organic (GOTS also monitors labor practices and working conditions), and currently grown in Texas, India, and Pakistan.

End of life

If at some point you wish to dispose of a filter, they can be cut into strips and composted, since they are organic cotton.
